Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on the latest situation surrounding Sheffield Wednesday behind the scenes.
Lee Hendrie has claimed that a change in ownership is the best way for Sheffield Wednesday to get out of their current issues behind the scenes.
According to The Telegraph, six players have handed in their notice after wages went unpaid for the second month since May.
The Owls have also been charged by the EFL due to the situation, and have been placed under a registration embargo.
Manager Danny Rohl’s future is also uncertain, with a departure from Hillsborough expected, with the club just weeks away from the start of the new Championship season.
Hendrie believes that Sheffield Wednesday are only going backwards under the current owner, Dejphon Chansiri, and that a change is needed.
He claimed that players leaving by terminating their contracts would leave the club in an absolute mess, urging the Owls to find a solution quickly.
“It just seems a real mess at Sheffield Wednesday at the moment,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“Obviously, players putting in requests to leave down to not being paid. The club seems to be in an absolute mess, to be quite honest.
“Obviously, takeover talks, they need to resolve this sooner rather than later because we’re weeks away from when the season is going to be starting.
“By the looks of it, there’s going to be players leaving the football club, which is going to just leave them an absolute mess. You find yourself promoted, you find yourself in the Championship and you feel that they’re going to try and push and progress.
“You do feel that the big thing holding this club back is the guy that’s in control, and that’s why I think it needs to be resolved sooner rather than later because it’s a big football club that certainly shouldn’t be taking backwards steps.
“And it does feel that way with players requesting to leave the club.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s season will get underway on 10 August with a trip to face Leicester City.
Sheffield Wednesday are having a nightmare summer, and there is no immediate end in sight either.
Supporters will be concerned about the health of the club short-term, and a takeover is really the only long-term solution to get out of this mess.
Players are entitled to leave due to FIFA’s contract rules, and it’s hard to begrudge anyone that jumps ship at this point, especially as pay is involved.
With Rohl also likely to leave, it’s not looking good for the Owls going into the new season, with fans only able to sit, wait, and hope that a takeover will go through ASAP, and a resolution be found.
