An insight into the unwavering faith of Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick in the talents of a member of his defensive ranks has this week been provided.

The player in question? Iñigo Martínez.

Defender Iñigo is of course in the midst of what has been nothing short of a brilliant individual campaign to date.

Having last season consistently seen his readiness to make the step up to a top club called into question, the 33-year-old has since gone on to put any such concerns firmly to bed.

Alongside defensive partner Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo has been nothing short of a rock in Barca’s backline, one of the first names on the team sheet of boss Hansi Flick.

Defensive excellence aside, the former Athletic Club man has also excelled on the ball, with his passing having been of the highest standard.

And such efforts, it is understood, have proven enough to convince manager Flick of Iñigo’s place in his long-term plans in Catalunya’s capital.

As per a report from Diario Sport, ahead of the Spaniard being rewarded with a new contract through 2027:

‘Flick made it clear that he wanted Iñigo Martínez in the team as long as he is Barça’s coach.’
