Celtic have tonight confirmed that Gustaf Lagerbielke has officially joined Portuguese top-flight side SC Braga. The move marks another crucial part of clearing the decks in Brendan Rodgers’ squad, as we look to streamline things and add quality in certain areas, whilst supplementing that with additions or promotions from the academy set-up.

Gus was brought into the club during that forgetful recruitment drive of summer 2023, when Irishman Rodgers first returned to the helm to replace Spurs bound Ange Postecoglou. It was an electrifying return to the club he left in 2019 for Leicester City and couldn’t wait to get started, but the excitement around that particular recruitment window failed to live up to expectations.

Unfortunately for Lagerbielke, he like so many others, just didn’t fit with Brendan’s style of or what he was looking for in central defence and except for a few outings – including a dramatic Glasgow Derby win over our rivals at Ibrox and a last-gasp winner over Feyenoord at Paradise in the UEFA Champions League – Gus’ time in Scotland just didn’t go according to plan.

A season-long loan deal to FC Twente put the Swedish international back in the shop window and it did the trick, as interest in his services mounted this summertime. Although the Dutch outfit couldn’t afford to bring him in on a permanent deal, that didn’t stop others and Braga eventually won the race for the defender. It’s claimed the transfer fee Celtic should receive for the big centre-back going to Portugal should be around the £2 million mark, meaning we have negated the total loss somewhat.

Perhaps under the correct conditions Gus will thrive and prove it was just a case of the wrong place at the wrong time, regarding his Celtic move.

We wish him all the best!
