Liverpool’s Pursuit of Isak: Hope Flickers as Deal Hangs in Balance

Liverpool’s transfer ambitions under Arne Slot remain as bold as ever. Having secured the Premier League title in 2024-25, the club is now eyeing a statement signing in the form of Alexander Isak. The latest episode of the Chat G & G podcast, featuring Grizz Khan and Gags Tandon, dived into the murky waters of this potential blockbuster move.

Isak Wants Liverpool, But Newcastle Hold the Power

Gags Tandon wasted no time in laying out the current situation with Newcastle’s star striker. “I think it’s now clear he doesn’t want to be at Newcastle,” he said. “I think now the Saudi owners know he doesn’t want to be at Newcastle.”

That desire, however, has been met with hard resistance. Grizz Khan explained, “His club have said not for sale. Now we ask the question, not for sale at any price or not for sale at a certain price?” According to sources close to the player and reported by Newcastle-based journalists, “Newcastle would not accept anything less than 150 million.”

Despite that daunting valuation, Grizz confirmed that Liverpool are financially equipped for the challenge. “Can we afford him? Yes. Do we want the player? Yes. Do we want him badly? It’s very apparent. Yes. Does the player want us? It’s very apparent now that he wants us.”

The Player’s Respectful Stance May Be a Hurdle

The hosts made it clear that while Isak may want the move, he is yet to apply the kind of pressure often needed to engineer an exit.

“If he really does want to join Liverpool,” Gags said, “he has to do enough to leave as well.” He added that Isak “has an agent that doesn’t mind pushing buttons,” yet asked, “why isn’t he doing it?” To which Grizz replied, “It’s a respect thing, man.”

That point was reinforced when Grizz referenced a private conversation with Ben Jacobs: “All the reports and all the sources close to and around the player suggest that he’s not that type of player to make a noise but he’s an ambitious player and he absolutely understands that these opportunities don’t come around often.”

Liverpool’s Vision Continues to Attract Europe’s Elite

Both podcasters highlighted the allure of what Grizz called “project Liverpool.” Gags Tandon used Florian Wirtz’s recent signing to illustrate that point, stating: “Florian Wirtz is a German international… had Bayern Munich after him… had Pep Guardiola after him. Yet he chose Liverpool and Arne Slot. If that’s not project Liverpool 2025, I don’t know what is.”

That ambition, they argue, is what appeals to players like Isak. But Newcastle’s reluctance to sell their “crown jewel” is understandable too. Grizz explained, “Newcastle fans expect him to give them at least a season in the Champions League… and if the crown jewel suddenly departs for Liverpool… it’s not a great look for the owners.”

Deal Still Alive, But Time is Running Out

While many reputable journalists have reported that Liverpool have pulled out of the race, Grizz pushed back on that narrative. “Even a poor pundit and a bluffer like me will tell you we haven’t moved away from the table,” he said. He added that “Ben Jacobs just done a show today as well and he said Liverpool… we haven’t given up on him. The situation is very fluid.”

Gags wrapped up the discussion with a note of realism. “It’s not likely that we sign Isak, but until there’s a possibility, keep hope alive. That’s all I’m saying.”

Liverpool’s interest in Alexander Isak remains a live wire. The financials are there, the intent is clear and the player is keen. But unless Isak and his agent push harder and Newcastle’s ownership shift stance, this one may remain just out of reach.
