In the complexity that is Italian football, only a few clubs have this grip on passion, loyalty, and drama as AS Roma. Also known as I Giallorossi, Roma’s storied past represents a unique blend of glory, pain, and pure magic—often realized through remarkable goals. From goals that decided league championships to Champions League craziness, these special goals went beyond impressive, often defying sports odds. Take a look at some of the greatest goals from AS Roma’s history, which will be celebrated and recounted by Romanisti for generations to come.
1. Francesco Totti vs Sampdoria (2006)
When thinking about Roma’s most memorable moments, we need to start with “Il Capitano”, Francesco Totti. In a 2006 match against Sampdoria, Totti turned for a truly remarkable moment when he scored from well outside the box, a goal which quickly became one of the most iconic goals in all of Serie A history. With his back to the goal, Totti produced a moment of pure genius that appeared to defy all laws of physics. The goal represented much more than just flair – it represented Totti’s own vision, creativity, and profundity to the great Eternal City.
2. Marco Delvecchio vs Parma (2001)
Roma found itself needing a victory against Parma at Stadio Olimpico on June 17, 2021, if they wanted to win their first Scudetto since 1983. Marco Delvecchio’s goal was not only a catalyst for a win, but one to settle the anxieties and hot breath from thousands of spectators. Delvecchio skillfully redirected a low cross from Vincent Candela to open the scoring. It wasn’t flashy, but his elegant touch helped secure a 3-1 victory and a Scudetto.
3. Francesco Totti vs Lazio (2015)
In January 2015, Totti’s second goal in a tense 2-2 tie against Lazio was an unforgettable moment of sheer Roman exuberance. After volleying in a spectacular goal to tie the game, Totti dashed behind the goal, grabbed a phone and took a selfie in front of the Curva Sud. The goal was a well-taken strike on its own, but the symbolism of an elder statesman continuing to defy an opponent and everyone else’s expectations and perceptions made it one of the most iconic goals in the history of the Derby della Capitale.
4. Alessandro Florenzi vs Barcelona (2015)
During the group stage of the 2015/16 Champions League, Roma welcomed Barcelona, the newly crowned European champions. After Barcelona went 1–0 up, Alessandro Florenzi hit a shot that ranks among the most spectacular goals in recent memory from the elite competition. From a few steps inside the halfway line, Florenzi noticed Marc-André ter Stegen off of his line and struck an incredible long-range shot into the net.
5. Kostas Manolas vs Barcelona (2018)
Roma’s 3-0 victory against Barcelona in the second leg of the 2018 Champions League quarterfinal is regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in the competition’s history. After falling 4-1 in the first leg at Camp Nou, Roma needed a miracle. With Barcelona leading the aggregate 4-3 and the clock winding down, Kostas Manolas climbed to meet a corner kick and sent a header to the far corner.
6. Bruno Conti vs Dundee United (1984)
Back in the days of the European Cup, Bruno Conti was a magician on the wing for Roma. In the second leg of the 1984 semi-final against Dundee United, Conti scored a crucial goal in Roma’s 3–0 win to overturn a 2–0 first-leg deficit. His thunderous drive from outside the box lit up the Olimpico and helped Roma reach their first—and only—European Cup final. Though they would lose on penalties to Liverpool in the final, Conti’s strike remains etched in club legend.
7. Daniele De Rossi vs Real Madrid (2008)
Known more for his leadership and grit than for flashy goals, Daniele De Rossi had his moment of brilliance in a 2–1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. His goal—a composed finish from a clever Simone Perrotta pass—sealed Roma’s place in the Champions League quarterfinals.
8. Cengiz Ünder vs Hellas Verona (2018)
Cengiz Ünder’s colossal left-footed goal against Hellas Verona in 2018 wasn’t a historical moment in football like some of the others on this list, but it was still the start of a new generation. At the tender age of 20, Ünder became the youngest foreign player to score in three Serie A games in a row for Roma.
9. Vincenzo Montella vs Lazio (2002)
In one of the most emphatic Derby della Capitale wins ever, Roma destroyed Lazio 5–1 in March 2002, with Vincenzo Montella scoring four goals. His third goal—an exquisite lob over the goalkeeper—was the pick of the bunch. The moment perfectly captured the confidence and swagger of Roma under Fabio Capello.
10. Francesco Totti vs Torino (2016)
In what would turn out to be one of his final performances for Roma, Totti was a substitute and rapidly changed the game with two goals in two minutes! The second goal, a composed penalty finish, was not as much about his technical quality, but instead the emotional element. The Olimpico was in tears, chanting for their King one last time. This goal, coming against the sports odds, would be the final act of a Roman epic.
