28 years ago today Celtic headed to Pittodrie for a vital Boxing Day league clash against Aberdeen…

The game was broadcasted live on Sky Sports with Celtic in the famous ‘bumblebee’ strip and it’s a game that still lives fresh in the memory until this very day.

It wasn’t a classic by all means, but the winning goal scored by that maverick genius that was Paolo Di Canio was a superb effort, and one typical of the madcap Italian’s astonishing ability.

As Celtic took a quick free kick from their own half the Aberdeen defence were caught napping and Paulo beat the offside flag and with one touch of his left foot brought the ball under control, one touch of his right took it past the keeper before stroking the ball home with his left.

All done in the blink of an eye, but an absolute piece of genius from Di Canio that won us the game and a goal that would remain in Celtic folklore. The Italian celebrated with the ecstatic Celtic supporters as teammate Simon Donnelly pointed to the Italian’s noticeably flashy golden boots.

Golden boots that became instantly famous and would fetch a massive five figure sum when they went to a charity auction.

Although it was the magical feet of Paolo that scored the goal and he could have done it barefoot, the golden boots gained great recognition, a feat that is still ingrained in the memory of the Celtic supporters.
