FLW's Birmingham City fan pundit has given his verdict on the club's impending move for Tommy Doyle
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Tommy Doyle is closing in on a move to Birmingham City with an option to buy clause worth £10 million.
It was exclusively revealed by FLW that the Midlands outfit were leading the race to his signature, with the Wolves player making the switch on an initial loan basis, with an option to buy.
Chris Davies is preparing the club for life back in the Championship following their stellar League One title winning campaign last year.
Birmingham will be hoping to be competitive in the second tier immediately, as they look to make ambitious signings that can help them fight for a place in the Premier League.
When asked about the £10 million price tag for Doyle, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed that the deal is worth going for.
He believes the midfielder has the potential to match the owners’ Premier League ambitions, and that he could end up being sold for more than £10 million in a few years if he does come good on that potential.
“In the current market, you’re after a Premier League player, you’ve got Premier League experience, he’s had two seasons there now, he’s shown that he can do it in the Championship as well,” Moore told Football League World.
“He’s still only young, probably got a couple of years left on his deal at Wolves, so it’ll probably be a fair price.
“And plus I think you just have to add the Birmingham tax onto stuff currently, I think naturally people have seen we’ve got money so they expect us to pay a little bit higher.
“And cause the owners are just so ambitious, the owners are just happy to do it with a certain degree, so I don’t mind.
“If he can get us up into the Premier League, we’ll say it’s good business.
“I can’t imagine he’ll stay with us for a long time anyway if we did go up, so hopefully we then move him on at some point and we make some of that money back, so I’m all for it.
“£10 million’s not too bad in this day and age, and we’ve got the money to spend, plus all the other signings that are potentially coming in currently are as a free at the moment, so if we’ve got the money to spend.
“Especially apparently that we’ve got revenues up there with parachute payments clubs, we’ve got money to spend, so go for it.”
Birmingham will kick-off the new Championship season at home against Ipswich Town on 8 August in an 8pm kick-off.
Birmingham are going to gain a reputation as soft negotiators if they continue to spend so much on players like Doyle and Jay Stansfield.
It was reported last summer that the midfielder joined Wolves in a deal worth just £4.3 million, so they’ve more than doubled that to bring him to St. Andrew’s after just 12 months.
While he does have Premier League experience, and should be a very capable Championship player, that is still a lot to spend as a newly-promoted side from League One.
It just adds pressure onto the player that he has to succeed, although the fact it’s only an option to buy as part of a loan does give Birmingham an out if he has a tricky year with the Midlands outfit.
