Glasgow City have announced the strengthening of their partnership with local charity Glasgow Women’s Aid. They are supporting the launch of their ‘He Loves Me Not’ campaign.

The campaign follows on from the club’s #NoExcuse campaign which highlighted the global drive, led by UN Women, to end all violence against women and girls by 2030. Here, players and staff wore specially designed warm up t-shirts. The squad then signed the shirts and sold them to raise funds for the organisation that has supported women and girls in Glasgow for over 50 years.

The ‘He Loves Me Not’ campaign challenges the traditional norms regarding love and romance. The strategy shows how manipulators can use these norms to mask coercive control. While Valentine’s Day is often perceived as a celebration of love, for many, it serves as a painful reminder of the ways love has been used as a tool for control, manipulation and abuse.

‘He Loves Me Not’ aims to reshape the conversation around love, making it clear that respect and equality build love. Not fear, control or manipulation.

The campaign message was be present in Friday’s match-day magazine, and via LED messaging throughout the Celtic game. Additionally, BBC Scotland also broadcasted the message live — a first for the SWPL.

‘He Loves Me Not’ is a powerful statement of solidarity

CEO of Glasgow Women’s Aid, Angela Devine said: “The partnership between Glasgow Women’s Aid and Glasgow City FC for the ‘He Loves Me Not’ campaign is a powerful statement of solidarity and shared commitment to combat violence against women and girls. By harnessing the visibility of Glasgow City FC, ‘The original trailblazers for women and girls in football’, we can raise much-needed awareness and reinforce the message that there is no justification for abuse.”

Laura Montgomery, Chief Executive at Glasgow City, also had the following to share about the campaign.

“The responsibility to use our platform to highlight issues that affect women and girls is one we take seriously. Partnering with Glasgow Women’s Aid on their ‘He Loves Me Not’ campaign not only strengthens our partnership with a local charity that puts these groups at the heart of what they do, but it also reinforces our message that there is no excuse for violence against women and girls. We will continue to strive for a fairer and safer world for all.”
