Gladbach started the match brightly, gradually taking control of possession. The first real chance fell to Kleindienst, who headed wide from a Kevin Stöger cross. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Rocco Reitz scored with a beautifully executed shot from the edge of the area. The goal came from a cleverly worked corner routine, which Stöger was at the heart of. Bochum struggled to create clear-cut chances, with their best opportunity falling to Philipp Hofmann, who headed over from a promising position.
The second half saw Gladbach extend their advantage. In the 55th minute, Robin Hack scored a brilliant individual goal, capitalising on a quick throw-in from Kleindienst. Hack's goal, his second of the season, effectively put the game beyond Bochum's reach. The visitors tried to respond but they struggled to break down Gladbach's resolute defence.
As the match entered its final stages, Gladbach continued to press for more goals. Their efforts were rewarded in the 86th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a VAR review of Nathan Ngoumou being brought down by Patrick Drewes as he attempted to round the goalkeeper. Kleindienst's initial spot-kick was saved by Drewes, but he reacted quickly to score from the rebound, securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory for the hosts. The win was Gladbach's first of 2025, while Bochum's away struggles continue.
Kleindienst delivered an outstanding performance, playing a crucial role in Gladbach's victory. The striker was involved in two goals, providing the assist for Hack's strike and scoring the third himself. Kleindienst's physical presence was a constant threat to Bochum's defence, as evidenced by his impressive tally of 25 challenges won - the highest in the match. His seven shots on goal, including the penalty and subsequent rebound, demonstrated his attacking threat throughout the game. Kleindienst also covered significant ground, making 20 sprints and being pressed 20 times, showcasing his work rate and importance to the team's play.
