At some point this summer it is expected that James McAtee will leave Manchester City. It is seemingly just a matter of which club will sign the talented young playmaker. There is seemingly no shortage of suitors wanting to add McAtee to their squad. Esteemed Kompany sources have revealed that a surprise candidate is leading the chase for the England under-21 international.

It has been learned by Esteemed Kompany sources that Manchester City are demanding between €25-30 million to sell McAtee this summer. Given that McAtee only has 12 months remaining on his current contract, it is unlikely that Manchester City will fetch a higher transfer fee for the talented attacking midfielder.

Esteemed Kompany sources have also discovered that Atalanta are leading the chase to sign James McAtee. Furthermore, it is believed that Atalanta’s negotiations to sign McAtee have reached an advanced stage. But Atalanta aren’t the only team eager to sign the England under-21 international. RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, VFB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund, Leeds United and Everton are also closely monitoring the McAtee situation.

It is a shame that the young attacking midfielder will likely have to depart Manchester City to further develop as a player. But looking at Pep Guardiola’s squad it seems that McAtee’s path to regular first-team football is blocked at Manchester City. Although McAtee can play on either wing or as a number ten, there is a host of players in his way. Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush, Oscar Bobb and Savinho would all contend with McAtee for regular minutes at City. It’s hard to see how McAtee would play ahead of any of those players. So a summer move is the best option for his career.

But given his talent and potential McAtee does have a host of options to consider. A move to Atalanta is an intriguing proposition. Atalanta have impressed in Serie A in recent seasons and play an attractive and attacking brand of football. McAtee’s strengths as a player would mesh well with Atalanta’s style of play. Serie A could be the ideal league for McAtee to kick on as a player. It remains to be seen if that is an option that McAtee will pursue.

It is now seemingly only a matter of time before James McAtee leaves Manchester City. For now, Atalanta appears to be leading the race to sign him. But as with all transfer races there could be more twists and turns to come before McAtee finds his next club.
