Girona kicked off the year by winning at Mendizorroza and now wants to open the season with a good result in front of their fans. Míchel's men, who have scored in the first game of the year for eleven consecutive seasons, will host a Sevilla team that is struggling to find consistency this season, and who are in the middle of the table. The Andalusians are thirteenth with 23 points, and although at times it seemed that they were able to reverse the dynamic, they have not been able to give continuity. In particular, their start was not good at all, scoring only five of the first eighteen points, but despite the improvement, this year they have played three consecutive matches without knowing the victory, losing in the Copa del Rey in the last game of 2024 against Almería and rescuing a point in the opening game of 2025 in stoppage time against Valencia. Even so, they have proven to be competitive and most of the defeats have been by the minimum.
García Pimienta makes his debut in the Nervión dugout this season. After a great experience at Las Palmas in three seasons in which he achieved promotion to the top flight, this year he has made the leap to Sevilla and despite the results not being as desired, he has remained faithful to a daring idea of play and with the ball as the protagonist. Lukebakio clearly stands out as the man with the most goals in the squad, having scored eight during the first round, and he is followed by youngsters Isaac and Juanlu with two. The Belgian striker, with a Bundesliga background, clearly concentrates the scoring, but as many as eight other teammates have found the net this year.
Girona and Sevilla have met on a total of nine occasions, with six wins for the Catalans and three for the Andalusians, and no draws. In fact, Sevilla won the first three encounters, and since then the Girona team has won six consecutive matches. In the first round, two goals from Iván Martín and Abel Ruiz earned the three points at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán (0-2), and last year in Montilivi the victory was in the form of a thrashing thanks to goals from Dovbyk, who scored a hat-trick, Tsygankov and Stuani (5-1).
