Reports in Italy claim Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino has called Mario Balotelli, who is available as a free agent, but the Grifone directors are unsure about the deal with the Italian striker.

Genoa coach Gilardino, a 2006 Italy World Cup winner, has called his compatriot Balotelli to sound out a possible move to the Stadio Ferraris.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news broke by La Repubblica, saying that Gila called Balotelli on Wednesday morning to discuss his availability to join the club.

Balotelli is available as a free agent after his contract with Adana Demirspor expired in June 2024. He and his agent, Enzo Raiola, have recently claimed that the priority is returning to Italy.

However, Thursday’s printed edition of Corriere dello Sport (page 24) reports Genoa directors are unsure about discussing a possible transfer with Balotelli.

Their owners, 777 Partners, in fact, have been declared bankrupt, so one of their main creditors, A-Cap, is expected to take control of the club.

Uncertainty over the club’s future make it difficult for Genoa to complete a new signing, even if their striker Vitinha has suffered a flexor injury this week and is expected to remain out of action for at least two weeks.
