Roma sporting director Florent Ghisolfi reviewed his side’s transfer business in January.
In an exclusive interview with Corriere della Sera, the French executive said, “Ranieri wanted to be transparent because the fans deserve sincerity,” when asked about the head coach’s recent press conference.
“The club signed a settlement agreement with UEFA in 2022, despite a significant deficit. It lasts for four seasons and this is the third, the most restrictive.”
“We worked on the wage bill, reducing it by over 20%, even though some salaries in the squad increased as the contracts stipulated. We must use logic to remain faithful to an ambitious program that includes the centenary in 2027 and the new stadium.”
“We moved within a forced financial aspect, which led to 5 sales and 5 purchases. We made them at the end because we had to wait for the strategies of the other clubs. We had to sell before buying.”
“We are talking about a settlement agreement, that is, a private agreement, between Rome and UEFA. To be clear: there is a speed limit of 30 km/h but we have to go at 20 because in the past we went at 50.”
“Lucca was never a possibility. We were looking for a second-choice striker behind Dovbyk, not a starter.”
“We worked on Frattesi: with him, with his agent and with Inter. We were close to an agreement. In 4 months we will see if his arrival is possible. His or that of a midfielder with his qualities.”
“The goal is to find sustainable certainties to add to those we already have: Koné, Dybala, Mancini, Ndicka, Svilar, Paredes who is important on the pitch and in the locker room. We are working with Paredes on the renewal for another year.”
“We don’t ask for time, because in football time doesn’t exist. Roma must bring joy and pride to the fans. And this season – I’m thinking except for the derby – we have given very little joy to the supporters.”
“Those who run this club give everything. Which doesn’t mean they don’t make mistakes. Ranieri, for example, would give an arm to reach the goals that Roma must get to.”
“I’m not talking about transition: we want to win today and at the same time work for the future. The Friedkins love Roma and the stadium project is the most obvious example of this.”
