Gerson’s exit from Flamengo took a personal turn on Saturday night as the midfielder marked his departure with a farewell gathering attended by current and former teammates, according to Lance. The event, held as he prepares to join Zenit St. Petersburg, brought together key figures from Flamengo’s dressing room, including Arrascaeta, Bruno Henrique, Wesley, Léo Pereira, Evertton Araújo, Lorran, and Joshua. Family members, as well as musical guests Mc Poze do Rodo and rapper Oruam, added to the celebratory mood.
Despite hosting the party, Gerson has yet to speak publicly about leaving Flamengo. The official confirmation arrived late last week when the Brazilian FA’s daily registration bulletin recorded the midfielder’s contract termination, finalizing his exit after he issued a unilateral request for release.
Zenit sealed Gerson’s transfer by activating his €25 million release clause in a single payment, as detailed in Lance’s coverage. Flamengo responded with a brief statement thanking Gerson “for the period he was at the disposal of the team, during which he won several titles, honored the red and black shirt, and became an idol for his dedication on the pitch.” The club also extended best wishes for his future.
Gerson’s departure comes shortly after he renewed his contract with Flamengo in April, when his release clause was revised. The club consistently held firm on their position, making it clear that any transfer would only happen if a suitor met the full release clause set in the revised deal.
Within the squad, Gerson’s influence was widely acknowledged and his exit resonated strongly. Arrascaeta, a close colleague in midfield, publicly saluted his former teammate on social media, describing Gerson as “synonymous with character and professionalism. Our group knows how important you were to our achievements and how much you always put this team above everything. You’ve earned my respect and truly are a great idol.”
Gerson’s spell at Flamengo was defined by a series of major trophies and a reputation for relentless commitment. As he prepares for a new chapter in Russian football, Flamengo are left to re-balance their midfield in his absence and move forward amid what has become a period of considerable squad change.
