Genoa sign Onana from Besiktas, but Cornet confusion with West Ham | OneFootball

Genoa had a chaotic deadline day, bringing Jean Onana back from Besiktas, with a mystery over Maxwel Cornet from West Ham United.

This was a return to Marassi for both of them, who had already worn the Rossoblu jersey on loan last season.

They evidently enjoyed the experience, as they returned to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in the final hours of the summer session.

Midfielder Onana had already been on loan from Besiktas from January to June, making nine appearances.

This time, it is a loan with obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

Genoa get Onana, but is Cornet completed?

The situation with Cornet was a little more confusing, because Genoa released a video showing popcorn marking his return from West Ham United.

However, it was later removed from their social media channels, and his contract does not appear on the Lega Serie A after the deadline.

There were no reports of problems, so it remains to be seen if the paperwork was completed in time, or if it had some irregularities.

Pianetagenoa1893 insist the problem is with the Lega Serie A and the contracts were signed and deposited on time, so it should be a valid transfer with announcement on Tuesday.

Cornet turns 29 later this month and was purchased by West Ham from Burnley in 2022 for €20.7m.

He had loans at Southampton and then Genoa from January to June 2025, making seven appearances in which he scored two goals and provided one assist.
