Barcelona star Gavi has this week named a former teammate whom he wishes would have stayed put at the club a little longer.

The player in question? Sergio Busquets.

Midfielder Busquets is of course regarded as nothing short of a legend amongst all of a Barcelona persuasion, owing to a trophy-laden stint in Catalunya’s capital.

Between 2008 and 2023, the Spanish international racked up a staggering nine La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, a host of Copa del Rey trophies and more.

All of this, whilst acting as a leading protagonist in one of the greatest midfield trios of all time, alongside Xavi and Andrés Iniesta.

And as alluded to above, this week, such endeavours have earned Busquets fresh praise on the part of a current member of the engine room ranks at Barcelona.

Speaking during an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Gavi highlighted a somewhat overlooked aspect of Busquets’ profile as a player, in the form of leadership, admitting that he wishes he could have spent longer learning from the now-Inter Miami star:

”When I arrived at Barça’s first team, I had a spectacular captain, Busi. I wish he’d stayed longer so I could continue learning a lot more from him. In my first year, I was 17, and if I made a mistake or did something wrong, Busi would call me out. That’s important. I’m 20 now, but I’ve been with the first team for four years now. I try to learn as much as possible from the veterans so that, tomorrow, I can give the best advice to the kids.”
