For years, FC Barcelona remained faithful to the traditional 4-3-3 system that defined its modern identity. However, with the arrival of Hansi Flick, a new tactical vision has taken root. The German coach has implemented a more dynamic 4-2-3-1 formation, marking a significant shift in how the Catalan giants approach the game.
This tactical change has benefited several players, notably Robert Lewandowski, who has flourished as the lone striker supported by three attacking midfielders. Others, however, needed time to adjust to the new structure. Gradually, the squad adapted and grew more comfortable with their roles in Flick’s evolving system.

While many players now have clearly defined responsibilities, a few remain tactically flexible, which is something Flick has made full use of. Among those versatile assets is Gavi, the homegrown talent who continues to impress with his adaptability and tenacity. Capable of playing in multiple midfield roles, Gavi can also step in as a left winger when needed.
Yet despite his adaptability, Gavi recently shared his personal preference when asked about his ideal position in Flick’s setup. Speaking to RAC1 (via Mundo Deportivo), the young midfielder said:
Honestly, in this system, I like both positions. But I do feel more comfortable playing as a 6 or 8 than as a 10. Playing at the base is where I feel best in this setup.
Despite facing strong competition in every midfield slot, Gavi’s quality and flexibility make him indispensable. His recent goal against FC Seoul was a timely reminder of the talent he brings to the pitch. At just 20 years old, the Spanish international continues to grow into a key figure for Barcelona’s present and future.
