Gary Neville claims that Christian Eriksen’s admission following Manchester United’s draw against FC Twente pointed to a squad that is not entirely committed to the cause.

This will concern fans because at the very least we expect our players to give everything for the shirt. A prime example of a player doing that is Lisandro Martinez, who never pulls out of a tackle.

Neville, who was reacting to United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, reckons alarm bells should be ringing when a senior player such as Eriksen admits the team did not show sufficient desire against opponents who simply “wanted it more”.

Eriksen spoke to reporters after United’s disappointing results in the Europa League last week, but his comments stuck with Neville, who made sure to reference them after our latest defeat and listless performance versus Spurs.

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville said: “It was a disgusting performance, I think that is the word I used at the end.

“But do you know something? All the words I’ve used – you might see headlines around, ‘Neville calls Manchester United disgusting’ – I think back to Christian Eriksen’s comments after the game on Wednesday night.

“From someone who is around the dressing room, someone who is a very senior player who should be trusted, he has had a long successful career, when he says they didn’t want it and don’t want it as much as another team in a game of football, that matters more than anything anyone else can say, because he is inside there, he is seeing it with his own eyes.

“We know what’s happening in there can’t be great because it transmits onto the pitch. The old adage of what happens in training translates onto the pitch is very true. The detail of everything has to be absolutely perfect.

“There is no doubt that something is going wrong in that United dressing room.”

It is going to be a pivotal week for Ten Hag at Old Trafford. United have started the season slowly and he has two games against FC Porto and Aston Villa to turn things around.

United are currently 12th in the Premier League standings.
