A “really proud” Gareth Taylor has spoken of his determination to drive Liverpool FC Women forward after being appointed head coach. The 52-year-old, who previously guided Manchester City to success in the Women’s FA Cup and League Cup, begins his new chapter eager to harness the club’s tradition and connection with its supporters.
“When I heard there was interest from Liverpool and seeing what a juggernaut of a club it is, it’s fantastic to actually be here… a fantastic club steeped in tradition,” he said. “There’s a real good connection with the supporters – I think it’s unparalleled.”
Taylor admitted the lure of Liverpool was impossible to resist. “When Liverpool come calling, it’s really hard to resist… that connection with supporters is unparalleled,” he explained. He also credited managing director Andy O’Boyle’s approach, describing their conversations as decisive in his move.
The opportunity to “move this thing forward” was key for Taylor, who acknowledged there will be “bumps in the road” but insists the ambition is high.
Early business in the transfer market has seen four new signings and several contract renewals, including key figure Gemma Bonner. “She’s been an incredible servant for Liverpool and securing her was really, really important,” Taylor said.
He was equally pleased to retain fan favourite Fuka Nagano, highlighting her potential to grow into a pivotal role. Recruitment remains a priority, though Taylor stressed the importance of valuing the talent already in the squad.
Liverpool fans can expect an attractive, purposeful style of play. “It’s to play a game and a style that actually we think will win more often than not,” Taylor explained. He wants the team’s identity to become a key part of its recruitment appeal.
The new boss also underlined the importance of connecting with supporters. “We’re going to need those guys… it’s a really exciting partnership for us to look forward to.”
With pre-season under way, Taylor is focused on shaping the squad to execute his vision. “Really clear, really clear,” he said of his approach. “I’m so delighted to be here… we’ll do good things together.”
