After the 3-0 win against Empoli, the newly-renewed Matteo Gabbia spoke to the media in the press conference room. Among other things, he sent a message to Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez, who are yet to renew.
The renewal of Gabbia’s contract was announced on Thursday evening, with the centre-back signing a contract until 2029. It’s expected that he will earn €2m per year instead of €1m and given how he has performed, this was well deserved.
After the win against Empoli, in which Gabbia played really well and got a 7/10 from us, he spoke to the media in the press conference room. He shared his thoughts on the win, his renewal and the two stars Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez.
What do you think of Fonseca’s words about your renewal?
“I’m very happy with the coach’s words: he’s the one who gives us input and feedback on what we do. I’m very happy about the renewal, you know how much I cared about it. And today gives continuity to some good days for me.”
Is this the form?
“We had a different solidity compared to other games. But the important thing is to praise and thank our forwards who give us a big hand.”
What is Camarda like?
“It’s not just because I say it. You can see from the things he tries, like the overhead kick today, that these things are inside him. He always trains with his head: this is his path. We pamper him, we protect him and hope that he can give us satisfaction in the future.”
Do you still believe in the Scudetto?
“We have the opportunity in our hands to make this season important and special.”
Will teammates like Theo and Maignan follow your example on the renewal too?
“I really hope so for my teammates, but I can’t make the decision for them. I hope with all my heart that they can stay with us for many more years. My understanding is that they are happy here. I try to do my best during training: if these things are then taken by my teammates as a stimulus, it only makes me happy.”
It remains to be seen if the duo will reach an agreement with the Rossoneri. There seems to be optimism regarding both, as Geoffrey Moncada also highlighted recently, and it could just be a matter of time from here.
