The 28-year-old has been with Saints since January 2020, when he joined on an initial loan, and whilst it has been a tough period for the club since, he has generally impressed.

But, with his £20k-a-week contract running down, and Southampton suffering relegation, it’s inevitable that Walker-Peters will be on the move this summer.

Marco Silva’s men remain in the hunt for a top eight finish, which is likely to bring European football, something that would no doubt make them a more attractive option to Walker-Peters.

Southampton will need to plan for a major squad overhaul this summer

It has been a terrible campaign for Saints, and Walker-Peters has to take some responsibility for his part of that.

But, he has still done enough to show that he belongs in the Premier League, and there is always going to be plenty of interest in the player, especially as he will be available on a free.

His ability to play down either flank, or as a wing-back, makes him an appealing option, and ultimately it will be down to the twice-capped England international to decide his next move.

From Southampton’s perspective, a major clear-out is required this summer, although the immediate priority is to appoint a new manager, who will need to assess the squad.

A losing mentality has engulfed the group this season, though, and many would benefit from a fresh start, whilst the new boss will want to bring in his own players. Of course, they will also have to be mindful of balancing the books after relegation.

So, it’s going to be a hectic few months for Southampton, who will still expect to be in a position to bounce back to the Premier League in 12 months time at the first attempt.
