The ex-Blue was on the club's radar back in the winter, but they didn't secure a deal for him.

Birmingham City signing January transfer target Nathan Redmond this summer would be a big boost for the club's return to the Championship, according to David Prutton.

The former Blue was being eyed by the eventual League One champions in the winter transfer window, according to Darren Witcoop.

Redmond, who last played for the club back in the 2012/13 season, is currently playing for Burnley, who themselves have been aiming for promotion all season long.

The 31-year-old former England international hasn't really been a part of Scott Parker's plans much since the manager joined the Clarets back in the summer - Redmond has only made one league appearance and that was in March against Luton Town.

His lack of minutes potentially opened the door for him to leave the club, but no move ever came to fruition.

Redmond has plenty of experience that he could bring to a second tier side, despite that one game against the Hatters being the only time he has played minutes in the English second tier.

That know-how could be of great use to a newly promoted side like Birmingham, who Prutton believes should be after Redmond when his contract expires this summer.

Nathan Redmond would be a strong addition for Birmingham to make

The Sky Sports pundit thinks that the winger's attributes would help City to re-establish themselves in the Championship. Birmingham confirmed their return to the second tier last Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Peterborough United. They were then crowned champions on Saturday when Wrexham failed to beat Wigan Athletic.

On the prospect of the wily veteran linking up with Chris Davies' side, Prutton exclusively told Football League World: "Nathan Redmond and Birmingham City, that sounds like a good fit, doesn't it? The experience of Nathan, the clubs that he has played for, the ability to handle the pressure that will come with playing for Birmingham with how they have been in League One.

"Quite rightly, and deservedly, they are champions. You get the feeling that they are in a hurry to get established back in the Championship as soon as possible with eyes on a Premier League return.

"From what I have heard, his approach as a professional, as a teammate, is one that would fit with that kind of core and culture that's been such a big part of what they have been about. That collective handling of pressure, the delivering of the way of expectation; every single person stepped up. I could see how Redmond would add to that with his experience."

Nathan Redmond would be a welcome addition at Birmingham

For all that Birmingham have a squad that is loaded with expensive talent, especially compared to the other sides in League One, they aren't hugely stacked on the wings. That's not to say that there aren't some strong players in those areas, Keshi Anderson being a good example, but it's certainly not the strong point of their squad.

They will lose Kieran Dowell in the summer when he goes back to Rangers, leaving them even shorter in this area of the pitch. Redmond, on pure ability, will almost certainly be better than anyone else they can get in, plus he brings all the qualities that come with playing at the highest level of the game. It seems like an obvious move for them to try and make.
