Freddie Strahan RIP | OneFootball

𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟴 – 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Freddie Strahan, a genuine Shelbourne FC legend. Freddie was the backbone of the ‘Doyle’s Ducklings’ in the late 50s and early 60s, under Gerry Doyle. Freddie dedicated much of his life to Shels both on and off the pitch.

He played for the Reds from 1957 to 1969, winning one League of Ireland title and two FAI Cups between 1960 and 1963. He was part of the team that blazed a trail in Europe, going up against FC Barcelona, Sporting Clube de Portugal, and Belenenses in the club’s early European adventures.

Internationally, Freddie was one of our most distinguished Reds in Green, earning five caps for Ireland and remains the only League of Ireland player to score against England since WWII, netting a goal in 1964.

The following day, he returned to his duties with Dublin Fire Brigade, his dedication both on and off the pitch was exemplary and he was one of the best ever to represent the Reds. After retiring from playing, that service and loyalty continued as he held the roles of club secretary, director, and manager in the 1970s and ’80s.
