Asked by Coventry Live whether he had any conversations with King and Austin ahead of the winter transfer window, Lampard said: "Yes, we have had some conversations. I’ll apologise that I can’t tell you much about them. But I think when you come in December and into a squad; we have players here and good competition in the squad and my first job is to absolutely work with the players.

“We have done that pretty well in the first few weeks and got some good results. You always want more but we feel like we have done OK. That has to continue as my first job and then if we can improve the squad then those conversations are important."

Continuing on, the former England international said: "I have found Doug and Dean very open, very lined up and want to communicate, and I’m the same. And we will continue to work that way through the window and if there are ways in which we can help the squad and bring players in then I am sure we will be looking at that.

“It’s important in this league, where there tends to be a lot of business in January at certain clubs, and if you feel you can do something to help push in the second part of the season... So we’ll see.”

Questioned whether he has picked any key areas to address, he said: “Yeah, and that’s part of my job. It’s not just my job. As a head coach you work with the team but I was brought in here for a reason and you have to have an opinion and you have to review what can improve the team.

“You’ll be judged on that further down the line so you had better be pretty firm in your convictions and try to get that bit right in conjunction with the club.

“I have got ideas and opinions but it’s very important for me to not get too far ahead of myself. I have got opinions where we could maybe be stronger but, again, my first thought is what we have got right now and we’ll work with that because I have only had three weeks and four games and I don’t want to make too many early decisions because players and situations can surprise you."

The key takeaway from this interview is that Lampard has clearly pinpointed areas that require attention in January.

While the specifics remain uncertain for now, any targeted moves by Coventry in the transfer market will soon reveal where the former Chelsea manager sees the greatest need for improvement.

Looking across the board, this could be in defence with the Sky Blues conceding 30 goals in their opening 21 games.
