Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Standard Liege are set to sign David Bates from Mechelen. The former Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Aberdeen defender will cost €500k and sign a contract for a few seasons. 27-year-old Bates is a former Scottish international who has been playing in the Belgian Pro League since joining Mechelen in the summer of 2022. This will be the defenders third Belgian club, having spent the 2020/2021 season on loan with Cercle Brugge.

Bates began his career with Raith Rovers before joining the Rangers set up permanently in 2017. He has then gone on to play for Hamburg, Sheffield Wednesday, Cercle Brugge and Aberdeen before his move to Mechelen. Bates only had one year left on his deal with Mechelen and will leave having made 67 appearances for the side, the most appearances he has made for a club during his career. During his time with Malinwa the defender scored five goals.
