Former Rangers Coach Set For Backroom Staff Role At Championship Club | OneFootball

Former Rangers assistant Harry Watling is expected to be part of Rob Edwards’ coaching staff at English Championship side Middlesbrough, according to journalist Alex Crook.

Middlesbrough are moving to bring in the former Luton Town boss to take charge after they decided to part ways with Michael Carrick.

Boro are looking to challenge for promotion in the Championship next season and believe that Edwards fits the bill as their new boss.

Edwards will arrive at the Riverside with Watling in his backroom team, though his exact role is as yet unclear.

Watling was at Rangers as part of Michael Beale’s coaching staff and is highly rated.

Beale’s time at Rangers did not go to plan and the Gers sacked him, before he then took the job of Sunderland boss.

He again struggled at Sunderland and lasted only 12 games as the manager of the Black Cats before being sacked.

Watling had a spell as a manager after he left Rangers and was in charge of National League side Ebbsfleet United.

He will hope to be able to have an impact at Middlesbrough as part of Edwards’ coaching staff.

In a twist of fate, Rangers are due to meet Middlesbrough in a friendly next month, as both clubs prepare for the new season.

The Gers have also confirmed a friendly against Belgian giants Club Brugge for early in July.

Rangers now have a new manager at the helm in the shape of Russell Martin, who started last season as the boss of Southampton in the Premier League.

Martin will want a quick start as Rangers boss as a host of Gers fans have been left underwhelmed by the appointment of the ex-MK Dons manager.
