Then GFFN quoted French football insider Mohamed Toubache-Ter, who says the incident happened as Nabil Bentaleb arrived at a five-a-side pitch.

The former Newcastle United midfielder’s life was saved thanks to the quick reflexes of his friends, who used a defibrillator and did CPR on him, and the swift intervention of first responders.

Nabil Bentaleb then underwent successful surgery this Wednesday (26 June) to be fitted with a pacemaker-defibrillator to stabilise his cardiac activity.

The upshot of all this is that the football authorities are expected to retire the player, due to the risks now involved with his health.

The Mag report – 20 June 2024:

Nabil Bentaleb is in hospital.

His club Lille has revealed (see below) that the 29-year-old was rushed in for treatment after falling ill with an unspecified condition.

The likes of Newcastle United and the Algerian Football Federation issued statements of support to the player, showing how worrying the situation appears to be.

Our best wishes to Nabil Bentaleb on his hopefully speedy recovery.

The midfielder only started eight Premier League games for Newcastle United, when he was one of a trio of loan players all brought in at the same time in a chaotic bizarre January 2020 window.

A shambolic situation overseen by Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce, as Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb all struggled when coming in. As to who exactly was deciding on transfers at the time is anybody’s guess.

Nabil Bentaleb was in conflict with his club Schalke at the time and eventually found himself at French minnows Angers, where he got regular football and did enough to get taken on by Lille.

He was a huge success last season and played in all 26 Ligue 1 matches he was available for, starting 23 of the 26 and off the bench in the other three. In the process helping Lille to an impressive fourth-place finish in the league.

Here’s hoping Nabil Bentaleb can pick up where he left off last season.

‘Former Premier League midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has been taken to hospital in France after falling ill.

The Algeria international, who started his senior career at Tottenham in 2013, joined Lille from Angers last year, making 34 appearances.

Bentaleb, 29, was “immediately taken care of and sent for hospitalisation” Lille said in a statement.

The club added: “LOSC [Lille] accompanies Nabil as closely as possible during this ordeal and gives him all its support.”

Bentaleb spent three years at Spurs, making 46 Premier League appearances, before joining Schalke in 2017.

He also had a loan spell at Newcastle in 2020 and has 52 caps and five goals for Algeria, having made his international debut in 2014.

“We’re sending you all our love and best wishes, Nabil. Everyone at the club is with you,” Spurs said on social media., external

Newcastle also shared on X, external: “Everyone at is with you, Nabil. We wish you a speedy recovery.”
