Simon Kjaer is calling it a career a few months after leaving Milan at the end of his contract. He spent five seasons with the Rossoneri from 2020 to 2024, accumulating 91 appearances. He was part of the squad that lifted the Scudetto in 2021/2021.

The center-back has played for four different Serie A teams: Palermo, which acquired him from Midtjylland when he was a youngster, then Roma and Atalanta. He has also spent time at Wolfsburg, Lille, Fenerbahce, and Sevilla throughout his career. He represented Denmark 132 times.

Kjaer disclosed his decision in an interview with TV 2 Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“Right now, it’s truly the right moment to close this chapter. It’s not a choice I made after the summer. I had thought about it before the Euro. I figured out last Autumn that my time in Milan was coming to an end. Nothing would have happened if I said it at the time.” “Many components influenced it: my kids and family, the national team, and the Rossoneri, which are the clubs of my dreams. It was a combination of things. I waited for something, but I had to make the call for my relatives and the sports aspects. I have no regrets and I’m not lacking anything in that regard.”

Kjaer is happy with how he went out.

“My final game was in San Siro and that experience… I knew very well that it was the end. I didn’t feel the need to relay it to anybody but myself. Looking back, I could have made it grander and gone to another team after Milan, but I didn’t need it, and it wasn’t that important to me.”
