Toure, who previously worked with Brendan Rodgers during his initial stint at Celtic, is now being linked with a possible coaching role at the Etihad under Guardiola.
Ivory Coast icon Toure, who earned 120 international caps over a 15-year career, has now been linked to the role at the English Premier League club by Fabrizio Romano as a potential candidate to rejoin his former side amid a summer shake-up in the coaching staff.
In a recent update shared on X, Romano stated: “EXCLUSIVE: Kolo Touré and Pep Lijnders are two options under consideration at Manchester City to be part of Pep Guardiola’s staff.”
“Decisions on new staff members soon, following departures of Juanma Lillo, Íñigo Domínguez and Carlos Vicens.”
Toure featured 17 times across all competitions during his only season at Celtic in 2016/17, then transitioned into a technical assistant role under Rodgers in 2017. He departed with Rodgers in 2019 to join Leicester City, later taking on the managerial role at Wigan Athletic in 2022.
After only nine matches at the helm of Wigan Athletic, the former Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool defender was relieved of his duties without securing a single victory.
Lijnders, his rumoured rival for the position, formerly coached at Liverpool under Rodgers and Klopp, and has managed NEC in the Netherlands and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria during 2018 and 2024, respectively.
The Dutchman was sacked at Austrian side RB Salzburg after only six months in charge – winning only 13 of his 29 matches in his second ever managerial role.

Last Sunday, Pep’s City secured Champions League group phase football for the 16th season running and could be potential opponents for Celtic in Europe’s elite club competition next season. The Hoops will have to negotiate a tricky two-legged qualifier in August to guarantee themselves a place at Europe’s top table.
