Sportbladet are reporting that Hammarby midfielder Fredrik Hammar has opted to sign for KV Mechelen over Plymouth Argyle. The latter were one of two sides in the EFL Championship that wanted to bring the midfielder to England. However, the sides position in the league and their recent sacking of Wayne Rooney have reportedly caused Hammar to opt for Belgium instead. Injury hit Mechelen could certainly do with extra reinforcements and Hammar will be a welcome addition.
The 23-year-old central midfielder has been with the Stockholm side since January of 2022. Prior to that he played for another side from the city in Brommapojkarna, before moving on to Akropolis IF and a brief spell with Brentford. He returned to Sweden and has gone on to make 59 appearances for Hammarby, scoring once. Hammar was also capped at youth level by Sweden.
It has not yet been disclosed how much Mechelen are paying for the midfielder.
