A former Chelsea player has told the club to sign a World Cup winning star this summer as he wants to see experience added.
Chelsea beat Los Angeles FC 2-0 in their Club World Cup opening group game on Monday night in what was a very strange and subdued atmosphere in front of just 22,000 people in a huge stadium.
It was far from vintage Chelsea but in the end they just got the job done and three points on the board to set them up for a good starts.
The goals came from a lovely Nicolas Jackson assist to Pedro Neto to finish in the first half. And then new signing Liam Delap also provided a superb assist for Enzo Fernandez to run into the box and tap in to score.
I have said for three years now that this young Chelsea team would benefit more by adding one or two more experienced and proven players in key areas on the pitch, and if we had done that I genuinely believe we would have had a better last couple of seasons.
I like the youth model, but it needed to be more balanced along the way in my view. Youth-led, fine, but not youth-only.
I’m not sure I agree with the player that Florent Malouda is recommending here, but the sentiment is correct.
Malouda tells Chelsea to sign Paul Pogba:
“I think Chelsea need an experienced player and Pogba has won the World Cup, the Europa League and knows the Premier League so well. Honestly, I think he belongs in the Premier League.
“He has been resilient in his career and in his private life, he will want to get to the top and his experience would be so valuable.
“All he does is overcome challenges and with Chelsea, I think he could adjust very well to their dressing room.”
