When Borussia Dortmund fell to an embarrassing 4-2 defeat against Holstein Kiel on matchday 17, Nuri Şahin made it abundantly clear that he is aware of the pressures of being a head coach.

With reports circulating regarding the 36-year-old’s future at the Westfalenstadion, as well as suggestions that the former Manchester United head coach Erik Ten Hag was being prepared to replace Şahin, it is fair to say that all eyes were on BvB’s clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, Die Schwarzgelben were unable to turn their form around, losing for a seventh time this season in the Bundesliga, as Die Adler recorded a 2-0 victory.

Nevertheless, after the final whistle, Dortmund director of sport Lars Ricken and their sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, stated that they still had full trust in Şahin and that his job was safe, for now.

Despite this, the 36-year-old explained to DAZN (via Sky Germany) that he is fully aware of the internal scrutiny he is under at the Westfalenstadion:

“The arguments are performance and results. I don’t need confirmation every three days that I’m staying in office. I know how the business works.”

“We know what the situation is; we know what the situation is. But that I need a shoulder to cry on—for God’s sake. I know what kind of job I’m doing.”

Is this the right time to part ways with Nuri Şahin?

It has already been stated that Şahin will be in charge for Dortmund’s clash against Bologna on Tuesday, and with back-to-back Champions League matches awaiting Die Schwarzgelben, the 36-year-old could face a reprieve from the chopping block.

Quite simply, there is not a period of time coming up that would make sense for Dortmund to let Şahin go with such a quick turnaround in fixtures.

Therefore, Şahin could have two weeks to convince those at the club that he is the right person for the job; otherwise, his date with destiny may lie in Heidenheim on the 1st of February.
