While there’s a lot of excitement in the air regarding the new Premier League campaign, Manchester United supporters know better than to get their hopes up. A 15th place finish in 2024/25 was hardly cause for celebration and this time around, all eyes are on Ruben Amorim to see what he can do to get this great club back on track.

The excitement of getting to the UEFA Europa League final quickly evaporated when they fell short to Spurs, and since then, there’s been a certain level of panic surrounding the club. The days of Sir Alex Ferguson’s magnificent dynasty are now a distant memory and if you’re a fan who has only tuned in during the last decade or so, you’ve been subjected to the occasional trophy and a lingering sense of dread and confusion.

As the old saying goes: “this is Manchester United we’re talking about”. They’re the kind of franchise that has been able to drag themselves out of the mud multiple times throughout their history and in the present day, they have a greater financial aid than they ever have before.

With that being said, we have more than a few concerns with just under two months to go before kick-off.

The owners: Sir Jim Ratcliffe made it clear that he was going to make big changes upon taking over at Manchester United - but few could’ve imagined they’d be so dramatic. In addition to massive cuts behind the scenes, there’s a feeling within the fanbase that he just doesn’t really understand the ethos of the club.

Extra domestic pressure: As a result of their failure to qualify for any European competition, there’s a whole lot of importance on what the Red Devils are able to achieve in the league, FA Cup and League Cup. That could turn out to be a positive, but if things go south again, Amorim could wind up on the chopping block.

Matheus Cunha: Fans are very excited with the arrival of Wolves’ top goalscorer last season. However, Matheus Cunha brings a whole lot of baggage to Old Trafford. From his lack of movement on the pitch to his red cards and general temper at Wolves, it’s easy to see this investment going wrong.

Strength of rivals: Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City will be gearing up for another title run and are most likely to do so according to the bookmakers. Manchester United are sixth favourites priced at 28/1 but the likes of Newcastle (14/1) and Chelsea (18/1) are levels above them right now. Even Aston Villa (50/1) who represent a better return are a much more solid outfit under Unai Emery which paints a demoralising picture especially with United’s biggest foes continuing to thrive.

Tricky start: There’s no point in trying to predict the results in United’s first eight games, because there’s a whole summer transfer window to get through first. However, the fact they have to play Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in that time, in addition to tricky trips to Fulham and Brentford, is worrying.
