Manchester United are heading into a new era of shirt sponsorship with Snapdragon sponsoring the club’s kits for the 2024-25 season.

But what exactly makes a great football kit? Design and sponsor certainly play their part, while the memorable moments produced when wearing a strip often add to the fondness in which it is remembered.

Following the release of the latest home and away editions, we’ve looked at five of the best Manchester United shirts of the Premier League era.

Manchester United Away – 1993-94

Manchester United have had their fair share of black numbers throughout the Premier League era but this is perhaps the best of the lot.

The yellow detailing perfectly complements the colours of the crest, with a smart collar often famously upturned by Eric Cantona.

Cantona had no shortage of memorable moments in this shirt but perhaps his biggest – for all the wrong reasons – was when he Kung-Fu kicked a fan in the crowd at Crystal Palace.

Manchester United Home – 1998-2000

The iconic kit worn during Manchester United’s greatest-ever season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble winners marched to their 1998-99 success in this Umbro-created design.

With the distinct look of a quarter-zip and the Umbro logo tapered down the sleeves to evoke nineties nostalgia, this is an absolute classic and arguably the biggest Manchester United collectable.

Manchester United Away/Third – 2001-02

Remember the days when football clubs did not absolutely milk fans with outrageously expensive shirts?

Well, Manchester United offered up a two-for-the-price-of-one offering in 2001-02, with a reversible shirt that doubled up as an away and third shirt.

However, the celebratory centenary shirt to celebrate 100 years of Manchester United did not exactly bring much success as the Red Devils.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side finished third in the Premier League (a disaster at that time and their lowest finish of the Premier League era) and crashed out of the Champions League semi-finals, losing on away goals to Bayer Leverkusen.

Nice design, though.

Manchester United Home – 2002-2004

Manchester United moved to Nike ahead of the 2002-03 season with the first offering from Umbro’s successors a beauty.

You can just picture Ruud van Nistelrooy getting an outstretched toe to another David Beckham cross in this shirt, one that saw the Red Devils reclaim the Premier League title from Arsenal in its first season.

It was also the final shirt that Beckham wore at Old Trafford – and the first that Cristiano Ronaldo did.

Manchester United Home – 2007-09

Manchester United conquered England and Europe in this design in 2007-08, a shirt that demonstrates that simplicity is sometimes best.

An almost entirely red design is uber-clean, with a centred AIG front logo and neat Nike swoosh.

It was worn by the tantalising front three of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side swept all before them to lift the Premier League and Champions League.
