Fashion Sakala: Is a return to the Chipolopolo on the cards?
The president of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), Keith Mweemba, has hinted that Fashion Sakala could soon make his comeback to the national team, several months after a highly publicized fallout with head coach Avram Grant.
The forward, sidelined from the national squad since the start of the year, had publicly criticized Grant, accusing him of poor management in player selection and blaming him for the decline of Zambian football. This outspoken stance sparked widespread controversy.
Among those calling for reconciliation is Paramount Chief Mpezeni, a highly influential traditional leader, who has questioned the FAZ’s silence and lack of action in resolving the dispute. In response, president Keith Mweemba acknowledged the weight of his remarks:
We respect our chief. He expressed his opinion, and that is his right. As the new leadership team at FAZ, we are focused on unity and professionalism at every level of football.
The FAZ president also pointed out that since he took office, the Chipolopolo have not yet played a competitive fixture, suggesting that dialogue remains possible:
No player is above the team, but everyone deserves a fair chance. As we begin preparations for upcoming competitions, we will do everything possible to ensure the best talents are available.
Currently playing abroad, Fashion Sakala remains one of Zambia’s most lethal attacking threats. His return to the squad would be a major boost as Zambia gears up for the crucial final stretch of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
