Fabrizio Romano sheds some light on the ongoing negotiations between Manchester United and RB Leipzig to finalise the transfer of Benjamin Sesko.
The Premier League giants were after several centre-forwards this summer, but spent more than a month occupied with the Bryan Mbeumo deal, which saw them miss out on several targets.
After sealing a deal with Brentford for the Cameroonian winger, the Reds prioritised the signing of a new striker who can be an upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund.
With several names on Jason Wilcox’s shortlist no longer available, Man Utd identified Sesko as their primary target.
Nevertheless, the 22-year-old had also attracted the interest of Newcastle who launched a bid worth €80m plus €10m.
But while Leipzig were perhaps inclined to accept, the player remained reluctant, holding on for a concrete approach from Man United, which didn’t take too long to arrive.

On Tuesday afternoon, it was reported that Man Utd submitted a formal bid worth €75m plus €10m. While this offer is lower than Newcastle’s, INEOS have been able to count on the player’s desire to join them. Moreover, reports on Wednesday morning, including one from David Ornstein, revealed that United have found an agreement with Sesko and his entourage on personal terms.
On Wednesday afternoon, Romano confirmed on this X account that Man Utd and Leipzig are still negotiating, as they finalise their agreement as soon as possible.
The Italian journalist reveals that the remaining issues that are being sorted out are the fee package and add-ons. Once these knots are untied, a full accord will be reached.
In the meantime, Sesko will be training on his own, while waiting for the green light to fly to Manchester and sign for the Red Devils. Therefore, all signs point out that the transfer is now imminent.
The Slovenian would be United’s third signing for the summer after Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo, so the next objective will likely be recruiting a new midfielder or a goalkeeper.
