Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Tom Cannon's role at Sheffield United following Danny Ings' arrival

Lee Hendrie has claimed that Tom Cannon should be wondering about his Sheffield United future following the arrival of Danny Ings.

The forward was a free agent after his departure from West Ham earlier in the summer, and he will compete for the number nine spot with Tyrese Campbell and Tom Cannon.

The Irishman was signed just last January in a deal with Leicester City worth £10 million, but will now have to fight for his place in the side with the 33-year-old.

Cannon has featured in each of the first three games so far this season, starting on just one occasion.

Hendrie has questioned the decision to sign Ings, claiming that there are more pressing needs to be addressed in the first team squad.

He is also unsure what the move means for Cannon’s future, indicating the forward may see this move as the end of the road for him at Bramall Lane already.

“I look and see the reports and I just find it really bizarre that a centre-forward is where they’re actually looking,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.

“Danny Ings, listen, fantastic football, lots of experience.

“When you do have the likes of Tom Cannon, who must be looking and thinking ‘what have I got to do, really?’

“Tom Cannon, you’ve obviously got Tyrese Campbell there, you look at it and you think the way things are at Sheffield United, defensively has been their issue, losing big players and midfield.

“But, yeah, if you’re Tom Cannon you certainly would be looking and thinking ‘this could be my time up at Sheffield United’.”

Sheffield United have lost all three of their opening league fixtures, and will face a trip to Middlesbrough on 30 August next.

Tom Cannon signing hasn’t worked for Sheffield United

Signing Cannon for £10 million was a questionable move at the time, and that has borne fruit in the months since.

The forward has started eight of his 18 appearances in the Championship for the Blades, contributing one goal and one assist.

The arrival of Ings is added competition, but he could also be seen as a replacement for Kieffer Moore and he will likely be third choice.

With new defensive signings arriving in the last few days, bringing in the 33-year-old may not be a disastrous move for the club, but it certainly does raise further questions about Cannon’s role in the team under Selles going forward.
