Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has been discussing Albion's recent poor run of form, and explored why it's been happening.

Tony Mowbray hasn't enjoyed the dream return to West Bromwich Albion that he, and indeed Baggies supporters, would've been hoping for.

Whilst it is a delight and an inspiration to see the 61-year-old back in the dugout following his recent recovery from bowel cancer, football is, and always has been, a results-driven industry.

Unfortunately for Mowbray, a poor string of performances and results have seen his side drop out of the play-off places, with Albion in the midst of a five-game winless run with defeats in their last three.

With just five games of the season remaining, there is little time for the veteran manager to turn his team's fortunes around, as the Baggies look to stop the rut this weekend when they welcome Watford to The Hawthorns on Saturday.

"It surprises me" - Don Goodman makes West Brom form claim

Speaking exclusively with Football League World, we asked Sky Sports pundit and former player, Don Goodman: 'Are you surprised at West Brom's recent poor form? What do you think the reason for it is?'

Goodman said: "Yes, I think I am a little bit surprised that West Bromwich Albion have struggled.

"I think what's surprised me even more is that they've struggled to score goals. You have to go back eight games since they scored more than one goal in a game of football (2-0 win v Oxford, 22 February).

"Which surprises me, because I do know Tony Mowbray is a very front-foot, attack-minded coach. So, that has been a problem, along with a couple of recent goalkeeping mistakes, and obviously conceding a couple of late goals to lose in two of their last three games.

"92nd-minute goal conceded to lose against Norwich, and a 96th-minute goal conceded to lose against Bristol City, in what were huge, huge games.

"So, it's been a very, very tough run. They probably need to win four out of their last five now, and given the opponents that they've got to play, that is looking a little bit like a tall order (Watford, Coventry, Derby, Cardiff and Luton respectively).

"It's disappointing, really, the way that results have turned out. Not necessarily performances, but certainly results."

West Brom have suffered for being wasteful in front of goal in recent weeks

As Goodman alluded to, Mowbray is very much an attacking-minded manager, and has enjoyed success with this approach at numerous stops throughout his long coaching career.

His West Brom side have largely been doing the right things and being effective in that regard in recent weeks too, but they have just lacked that clinical nature in the final third.

As outlined in the table above, the Baggies have registered a total of 66 shots on goal over the course of their last four Championship outings, but just 18 of those have been on target - per FotMob.

So, it's not as if Mowbray's men aren't creating goalscoring opportunities; they are, and plenty of them at that. However, when it comes to taking their chances, Albion have been extremely wasteful.

Therefore, if West Brom are to record a top six finish this season, then Mowbray is going to need his key forward players to show that they can be ruthless in attack, as otherwise, this consistent habit of letting teams off the hook looks set to cost them a shot at playing for a place in the Premier League.
