Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about Millwall signing Alfie Doughty from Luton Town.

Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie thinks Millwall’s addition of Alfie Doughty is “excellent business”, believing the former Luton Town man really suits the Lions’ style of play under Alex Neil.

The East London outfit will be hoping to go one better come the end of next season and secure a play-off place, after a final day defeat to Burnley left them narrowly outside the top six.

In their efforts to bolster the squad and target promotion to the Premier League this upcoming term, Millwall have recruited six new players into the building.

The most recent arrival is of attacking defender Alfie Doughty, who ended his three-year spell with the Hatters to make a move to the Den.

Possessing vital experience in both the Championship and Premier League, pundit Lee Hendrie has reflected on whether this arrival will be a success.

Lee Hendrie backs Alfie Doughty to thrive in Millwall system

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has backed Alfie Doughty to be a success for Millwall, believing the Lions’ style of play can bring the best out of his game.

Hendrie said: “I think this is a brilliant signing for Millwall to get Alfie Doughty.

“He was definitely better than League One, there was no doubt about that, and Millwall bringing him in is absolutely excellent business, particularly with the way that they play.

”They like to utilise wing-backs, they do like to get balls into the box, and he’s very good at what he does playing out on that left-hand side.

“I think this is a really big coup for Millwall.”

Alfie Doughty signing is a statement of intent by Millwall

Millwall have put the rest of the Championship on alert by recruiting someone of Alfie Doughty’s quality.

Doughty was a tremendous success during his time at Kenilworth Road, playing a key role in Luton Town’s promotion to the Premier League and then transforming into a consistently impressive performer in the top-flight, notching eight assists despite the Hatters’ eventual relegation.

The 25-year-old was hampered by injury last term, which saw his influence on the Luton side dwindle as they crumbled to back-to-back relegations, but Doughty has proven that he can be effective in the top-flight, so he’s definitely a player to get on the books to help repeat what he achieved with Luton.

As Lee Hendrie alluded to, Doughty should thrive with the way Millwall like to play too.

Their constant will to attack down the flanks should see the former Charlton Athletic man create bundles of opportunities for the Lions' frontline, which could lead to a flow of goals at the top end of the pitch to get the club pushing towards the top ends of the division.

Millwall will be viewed as dark horses for promotion this season, and the arrival of Doughty will only strengthen those claims.
