Lee Hendrie believes Hull City can't afford to gamble with their next managerial appointment
Hull City were recently revealed to have begun discussions with Kayserispor boss, Sergej Jakirovic, to replace former manager Ruben Selles.
According to Hull Live, the Tigers are in advanced negotiations with the 48-year-old, who would become the club’s sixth permanent boss since Acun Ilicali’s £30 million takeover of the club back in January 2022.
Mike White of BBC Radio Humberside reaffirmed these rumours, which makes it even more likely that Jakirovic will be appointed as Hull’s new boss.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, believes the importance of this appointment can’t be overstated.
“I find myself saying this over and over about Hull City,” stated Hendrie.
“They have to give someone the reins, they have to give someone the belief that they're going to be in the football club and in a job, because Hull do have to get the appointment right.
“Since Liam Rosenior left, they just haven't been able to do so. They've taken gamble after gamble, bringing in Ruben Selles, who didn’t get the opportunity to carry on, with him leaving the football club and looking elsewhere.
“It's just crazy! I think that you do need stability. I hope it does work out for Hull City this time around because they’re a club that certainly are striving to go forward, and the owners are very, very keen on getting into the Premier League and having a promotion push.
“They have got that enthusiasm to really go for it, but they have to get it right because they can't do what they did last season and be very inconsistent, change the whole format, and keep changing the manager. It just isn't, for me, healthy for the football club.
“They have to make sure that they get this appointment correct and give them the time to really go and build and try and take Hull City forward.”
After such a horrific season in 2024/25, Hull City fans will be crying out for stability next term at the MKM stadium, as they aim to compete further up the table.
Jakirovic will be an unknown entity to most, which could spark fear amongst the Tigers’ faithful, who want to be assured that their club will be under the right management.
The 48-year-old guided Zrinjski Mostar to the Bosnian Premier League title in the 2022/23 campaign, clinching the championship by a humungous 27 points.
Jakirovic led Dinamo Zagreb to the Croatian league and cup in the 2023/24 campaign, before being handed his marching orders after suffering a 9-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Although he has enjoyed success during his managerial career, he will be new to the English game, which has proven to be a challenge for even the most experienced coaches.
Therefore, unfortunately for Hull City fans, this might be another roll of the dice from Ilicali and Co. that could end in disaster.
