Speaking exclusively with FLW, Don Goodman has been discussing Swansea City's capture of Ipswich Town defender, Cameron Burgess.
Swansea City have secured the signing of Ipswich Town defender Cameron Burgess.
The deal was confirmed last weekend, with the 29-year-old centre-back penning a three-year contract with the Swans.
It appears to be quite the coup for Alan Sheehan's side too, as it had been reported that Spanish giants Valencia had opened talks over a potential deal for Burgess, whilst fellow La Liga outfit Girona and Rangers had also been interested in acquiring his services.
Speaking exclusively with Football League World, we asked Sky Sports pundit and former player, Don Goodman: 'Swansea have signed Cameron Burgess. Is that a big coup given how much he was involved at Ipswich Town?'
Goodman said: "I think it's a standout signing Cameron Burgess going to Swansea City, isn't it?
"A statement of intent, and if I was a Swansea City fan, I'd be finally starting to get a little bit excited after quite a few years where there hasn't been an awful lot to shout about.
"Look, there was lots of competition at Ipswich Town: Dara O'Shea, Jacob Greaves, Luke Woolfenden, Ben Godfrey was there on loan, and even Axel Tuanzebe can play at centre-half.
"So, he probably felt that he wasn't going to get the game-time. He didn't really get the game-time in the Premier League that he would've hoped for at 29.
"He obviously wanted to play week-in, week-out, and he's going to do that at Swansea City. Good capture."
Swansea City's defensive ranks took a blow this week after it was confirmed that star centre-back Harry Darling had signed for Norwich City on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old had been a mainstay in the heart of Swansea's defence during his three years with the club, after arriving from MK Dons in the summer of 2022.
He leaves the Swansea.com Stadium fresh off the back of arguably his best individual campaign as a City player, having bagged five goals and three assists from 39 Championship appearances last term.
As such, losing a player of his quality was always going to hurt, but in Burgess, The Jacks appear to have found a highly effective pain relief.
The big defender played an essential role in Ipswich's remarkable 2023/24 automatic-promotion winning campaign, in which he made 39 Championship appearances for the Tractor Boys that term.
An Australian international, Burgess also didn't look out of place in the Premier League last season, and with a World Cup on the horizon, he'll be desperate to ensure the 2025/26 season is his best yet.
Therefore, Swansea look to have struck gold with this signing, and given the standard of clubs that were also after his signature, that should be a good indication as to how much of a coup this deal potentially is.
