The Addicks earned promotion through the play-offs, with Nathan Jones’ side winning 1-0 against Leyton Orient at Wembley Stadium last weekend.

The London outfit have been out of the second division since their relegation in 2020 but will now be looking to establish themselves at that level once again.

The promoted trio of Pompey, Oxford and Derby County all survived in the Championship this year, offering them some reason for optimism over the next 12 months.

Goodman urges Charlton to spend

Goodman hopes that Charlton have money to spend this summer, as he believes they will need to in order to survive in the Championship.

He’s pointed to the fact last year’s promoted clubs were all in the mix for relegation even with spending, highlighting how difficult the next campaign could be for Jones’ side.

“You’d like to think that Charlton Athletic will have some money to spend, some resources,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“And they will have to spend a reasonable amount I think in order to be able to compete, just like Oxford did last season, along with Portsmouth and Derby County ultimately in the January window.

“I think those three were all obviously, at various points of the season, quite up and near the end involved in the struggle to get away from the relegation zone.

“All three achieved it, but it wasn’t without its difficulties.

“I would expect Charlton to have a similar scenario next season, with respect.”

Charlton’s promotion success

Charlton’s strong end to the campaign saw them win four of their last five regular league fixtures to come fourth in the League One table.

A 1-0 aggregate victory over Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-finals of the play-offs earned the Addicks a place in the Wembley showcase.

Macaulay Gillesphey’s first-half strike against the Orient sealed a momentous victory for the club.

That goal ended Charlton’s five-year stint in League One, with their sights now set on remaining in the Championship.

Charlton will have to spend this summer

All three promoted sides had to invest in their squads last summer, but it proved worthwhile as they all managed to survive.

That’s encouraging for the likes of Charlton, who won’t have the same level of resources as most Championship sides.

The likes of Plymouth Argyle and Rotherham United have also been able to maintain their place in the division immediately after promotion, so there are reasons to be optimistic about next year for the club.
