David Prutton gives his take on Leeds' interest in Sean Longstaff.
David Prutton has admitted that Sean Longstaff would be a good addition for Leeds United amid the 27-year-old's recent links to the club.
The Whites secured promotion to the Premier League on Easter Monday and will be looking to clinch the Championship title on the final day as they travel to Plymouth Argyle.
Past that, they are already looking at potential additions they can make in the summer and Longstaff's name has cropped up. According to The i Paper, the Yorkshire club are keen on the midfielder, who has made over 200 appearances for Newcastle United since making his debut in 2018.
This season, Longstaff has found minutes hard to come by amid Eddie Howe's preferred midfield trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
This could see the £50k-a-week star depart St James' Park and he may prove a valuable addition to Daniel Farke's side with his heavy top flight experience.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World about the potential of Longstaff joining the Whites, David Prutton admitted that it was a deal he could see happening amid the 27-year-old's Premier League know-how.
"Sean Longstaff would be a solid addition for Leeds given the experience he has got under his belt at the top level," the former Sheffield Wednesday man told FLW.
"The thing you instantly like about players like that is his work ethic, his ability to be part of a team and the understanding of the pressure that comes with playing for a big football team, because he knows exactly what Newcastle is. He will have no qualms or worries about replicating that for Leeds United.
"The price has to be right, the wages have to be right, they can't blow part of a structure that has been carefully curated. But, there is no point going up to the Premier League and not giving yourself the tools to do that and Sean could be a decent addition."
An archetypal box-to-box midfielder, Longstaff is a signing that makes sense for both his experience and his quality on the pitch.
He remains highly trusted by Howe, and while making only eight starts this season will have been a disappointment, he was a regular starter last year and during the campaign in which Newcastle secured Champions League football.
In terms of the cost he may come at, it would likely be better than expected for the Whites. The 27-year-old's deal at St James' Park expires in 2026, meaning that he heads into this summer with just 12 months remaining on his current contract. This should see the midfielder come at a cut-price figure - something that the Yorkshire outfit should take advantage of.
Admittedly, where Longstaff sees his future is unclear. Having been a Newcastle player since joining the academy in 2006, he may be reluctant to leave his boyhood club, but a move slightly south should prove an attractive prospect.
It’s certainly a deal to keep an eye on this summer - and if Leeds’ interest is genuine, they should look to see it through once the window opens.
