Manchester United’s leaky defence is in urgent need of repairs after a season in which they conceded 84 times, their most since 1971.

The number could yet rise as the team is set to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. And that might have a major bearing on the futures of manager Erik ten Hag and several of his players.

Raphael Varane has already announced his departure while Jonny Evans’ current deal also ends in June. Recent reports have indicated that the club are unlikely to offer him an extension.

Harry Maguire, who will miss the summit clash, and Victor Lindelof have both been linked with exits as the club looks to steer clear of Profit and Sustainability concerns.

United’s CB search

As previously relayed by The Peoples Person, the budget is quite low and the club will need to show inventiveness while recruiting players.

INEOS have reportedly set aside a fixed budget for their top centre-back target, Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton, and are unlikely to go beyond £55 million.

The Toffees had, at one point in time, slapped a ridiculous valuation of £100 million on the 21-year-old with both Manchester City and Real Madrid also eyeing the defender.

The team from Merseyside have already faced the brunt of PSR concerns, and seen their points docked, and they are reportedly under pressure to balance their books before June.

The 20-time English league champions had planned to use this to their advantage by agreeing a pre-agreement with the player on a cut-price fee.

i News have now claimed that Sean Dyche’s team are adamant that they will not sell the Englishman for less than £80 million and are willing to keep him for another season if required.

Jarrad price

“Everton have slapped a minimum price tag of £80m on highly-rated defender Jarrad Branthwaite, with club insiders dismissing the prospect of a fire sale of one of their prized assets.

“Branthwaite has been linked with a move to Manchester United for a fee in the region of £55m but i understands Everton have no intention of selling at that price.

“Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United also hold an interest in the defender but clubs looking for a cut-price deal will be given short shrift.”

Whether United can afford such an amount especially considering they also need a midfielder and striker will be interesting to see.
