Cyriel Dessers is once again the subject of transfer interest, and this time it is coming from Greece. Reports suggest AEK Athens have been monitoring the Rangers striker closely and could be set to make a £6.5M move during the summer window. The Nigerian international had a turbulent first season at Ibrox but ended the second campaign with a decent goal return, which seems to have caught the attention of the Greek giants.
Dessers is not universally loved among the Rangers support. His style of play has drawn criticism from large sections of the fanbase despite his numbers stacking up reasonably well by the end. He managed 22 goals in all competitions and remained one of the most available players across a gruelling season that saw several others fall away through injury or inconsistency. Some Rangers fans have even slammed his award recognition despite those solid stats. AEK Athens are believed to have been watching his progress for some time and could view him as an ideal addition to their front line as they aim to challenge for domestic and European success.
This potential move opens a number of questions for Rangers. With Russell Martin expected to oversee a clear-out and rebuild this summer the sale of Dessers could offer both financial gain and room for a new striker who better fits the manager’s philosophy. Despite the mixed reaction from fans it is clear Dessers has value and a solid scoring record in various European leagues. Many fans now argue he deserves far more credit than he has received. AEK’s interest simply reaffirms that view and may offer Rangers a welcome opportunity to cash in if the price is right.
It also places a bit of pressure on the recruitment team. If Dessers is sold replacements will need to be found quickly. The club is already thin up front with limited reliable options and cannot afford to enter the new season without a proven scorer. Whether Martin sees Dessers as part of the future or not AEK’s interest has stirred the pot and brought his future into sharp focus.
