Goals from Sjoeke Nüsken and Lea Schüller saw Germany come from behind to beat Denmark 2-1 in Basel.

With German captain Giulia Gwinn ruled out of the tournament as a result of picking up an injury in their opening game against Poland, Carlotta Wamser was given the nod at right back.

Germany started well, looking to live up to their tag as one of the favourites to lift the trophy. A surging run through the Danish midfield from Schüller created space. She laid the ball off to Klara Bühl, but the Bayern Munich forward’s shot was blocked.

The first half threatened to be one of frustration for the eight-time winners. Bühl thought she’d given her side the lead on 18 minutes when she swept home Jule Brand’s pass from the edge of the box. Following a VAR check that seemed to take an eternity, the goal was ruled out for an offside against Nüsken.

That frustration was compounded when Denmark took the lead just moments later. A poor pass presented Janni Thomsen. She strode through the German midfield. Her pass was deflected off of Schüller and into the path of Amalie Vangsgaard.

Vangsgaard’s first touch got the ball out of her feet. Her second was powerful, precise and unerring as it whistled past Ann Katrin-Berger and into the bottom corner.

VAR decisions unfold

Denmark had a precious lead to defend as they looked to bounce back from an opening day defeat against Sweden.

However, ten minutes later, it looked as if that lead would be wiped out. Frederikke Thørgersen was judged to have handled in her own box and Germany were awarded a penalty.

After yet another lengthy VAR delay, the decision was overruled. No penalty. Denmark breathed again.

Germany continued to pile the pressure into the Danes. Maja Østergaard was alert to push over Sarai Linder’s speculative effort. From the resulting corner, Wamser was next to try, but Østergaard was there again. This time diving to her left to beat the ball away.

Sara Holmgaard had a great chance to send Denmark into the break two goals up. The newly minted Real Madrid player was found by a wonderful Pernille Harder cross. But rather than take the shot first time, Holmgaard hesitated and the chance was gone.

That was the last action of an enthralling first half that threatened to upset the Group C applecart.

Five minutes after the restart, Germany had the goal their play deserved.

Linda Dallman was felled in the Danish box but the referee waved play on amid huge appeals. It was third time lucky for the Germans as VAR overturned the onfield decision.

Nüsken stepped up and hammered home low to the goalkeeper’s right. Østergaard went the right way, but stood no chance.

Denmark knew a draw would leave them with a chance of making the knockouts. Germany wanted to get their job as soon as possible.

With 66 minutes gone, Danish hearts were broken. It was a goal that came about in the most unfortunate of circumstances. Emma Færge hammered the ball into compatriot Emma Snerle and broke to Brand. With Snerle poleaxed on the floor, Brand rolled the ball across to Schüller who curled Germany into the lead.

Full-time came. Germany had one foot in the quarter-finals. That became two just a few hours later with Sweden’s win over Poland securing both sides’ safe passage.

Germany haven’t looked at their sparkling best yet in Switzerland, but that could all change very soon.
