Manchester City and Erling Haaland are both working towards a contract extension for the Norway international in the coming weeks and months, according to reports.

The 24-year-old remains connected to his original contract signed upon joining Manchester City in the summer transfer window of 2022, making the switch from Borussia Dortmund in a £52 million agreement via a release clause.

The striker has broken almost every individual record in sight and heavily contributed to a further development in Manchester City’s success, winning a Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble in his debut campaign.

As such, officials from within the club are keen to protect his astronomical market value and also recognise his outstanding achievements and performances under Pep Guardiola by renewing and improving his contract with the club.

And the latest developments on that picture would appear to indicate that the desire for a new contract is a mutual feeling between both Manchester City and Erling Haaland himself, with no intention of seeking a new challenge abroad.

That is according to a new report from Spanish newspaper MARCA, which claims that Erling Haaland has not asked to leave Manchester City, and instead both the player and club are in negotiations over a possible contract extension.

It is further stated that the Norway international is clear that his immediate future lies with the Premier League champions, and has no intention of taking advantage of off-field legal issues looming over the club.

However, one point of concern for some supporters may be the claim that Haaland’s current agreement at City states that he is ‘free to leave or when he leaves’, and for a fee of around €70 million, which is not valid for all teams, and ‘especially’ those in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland’s position within the Manchester City dressing room has also developed throughout the course of his time at the Etihad Stadium, viewed as a leadership profile and taking on the captain’s armband during the pre-season tour of the United States.

“If he stays longer, he will be one of the (Manchester City) captains, that is normal,” Guardiola explained over the summer months. “The impact since he arrived is really, really good. Always happy, and positive, and incredible, incredible.”

For now, Haaland remains outside of Manchester City’s six-man leadership group, with Kyle Walker retaining the captain’s armband for a second consecutive season, with support from Kevin De Bruyne in the role of vice-captain.
