In the build up to the game against Arsenal, Enzo Maresca did a Sky Sports bit called “Questions you’ve always wanted to ask a manager.”

Along the way he answers lots of funny little queries fans have had about all sorts of odds and ends from the life of a Premier League coach. You can find out whether there’s a clothing policy for managers, or whether he just wears that tracksuit because he likes it.

Maresca is polite, but he’s not exactly the cuddly Mauricio Pochettino when it comes to these things, and sometimes you can tell the interviewer is wishing he’d give just a little bit more back. Still, that’s not his job.

Maresca on incredible work ethic and preparation

He was interesting when it came to talking about preparation for the game. How soon after a game is he thinking about the next one?

“Actually, when the last game finishes, for most managers we’re already starting to think about the next game,” Maresca explained.

“It’s something which, for sure I start to rewatch games afterwards, clips, and we have staff and analyst who prepare things for us.

“Sometimes we try [to have a break], but especially when you play every 3 days it’s more complicated. Once a week is more relaxed.”

He also then added more detail about the clips and previews he gets of opposition teams:

“Our meetings used to be quite short – 10-15 minutes, no more than that. We watch different games, for instance our next Premier League game we’re going to watch the 8 previous games from the other team.”

8 games… that’s a lot of footage to review. No wonder he doesn’t have time to humour any silly Sky Sports media commitments with too much depth…
