Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca admits that the goalkeeping situation at the club is concerning after Filip Jorgensen made a crucial error against Aston Villa on Saturday night.

The Swedish-born Denmark youth international, who joined the Blues from Villareal for around £20 million last summer, let Marco Asensio’s swerving strike to squirm beneath him for the equaliser.

The goal completed a comeback for the hosts after Enzo Fernandez had scored the opener at Villa Park. Asensio teamed up with Marcus Rashford for both the equaliser winner to condemn Chelsea to their third defeat in four Premier League games.

Jorgensen had replaced Robert Sanchez in nets following a number of erratic performances from the Spaniard, but the 22-year-old’s position between the sticks could be in danger following his latest performance.

Asked if he was worried about the current situation with his goalkeepers, Maresca told BBC Match of the Day: “I am always concerned, even when we were winning games, I was concerned. Now for sure.

“The problem with that with goalkeepers, it is a delicate position and when they make a mistake, everyone can see. Unfortunately today, our goalkeeper [Filip Jorgensen] made a mistake.

“This is a moment we need to support each other and try to stay strong.”

Maresca felt that his side defended well overall, but were ultimately punished for not putting away their chances in the game.

“If you are not clinical, this league is always open – if you make a mistake, like we did in the second goal unfortunately. When we have the chance, we have to take that,” he said.

“Once again today, we showed we can be good for long parts of the game. But that’s not enough. The performance has to be complete.

“We need to score goals when we have the chance and defend well, but I thought we defended well today. It is a moment were we were also a bit unlucky.”
