England have won Euro 2025, defeating Spain 3-1 on penalties to win consecutive European Championships.
After claiming the title in 2022 on home soil with a dramatic 2-1 win over Germany in extra-time, Sarina Wiegman’s side defeated World Champions Spain in the shootout after the match ended 1-1. Alessia Russo equalised for England early in the second half after Mariona Caldentey had headed the Spanish into an early first half lead.
Chloe Kelly, who scored the winner for the Lionesses in 2022, was a first half substitute for the injured Lauren James, and scored the decisive penalty kick after Hannah Hampton had saved from both Aitana Bonmati and Caldentey.
It was not plain sailing in the shootout for England, with both Beth Mead and captain Leah Williamson seeing their spot kicks saved by Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll.
Speaking after the match, Kelly said: “I am so proud of this team. So grateful to wear this badge. So proud to be English.
“I was cool, I was composed. I knew I was going to hit the back of the net. I don’t miss penalties twice. Unbelievable. All the staff behind us and Sarina Wiegman – she has done it again! It is going to be crazy. I hope the whole of England comes out to support us and shows their love to these girls as they deserve it.”
England had to come from behind for the third consecutive match in the knockout stages, having come from 2-0 down to take Sweden to extra-time in the quarter-finals before winning on penalties, then equalising against Italy in the 96th minute in the semi-finals to force extra-time yet again. Kelly would score the subsequent winner against the Italians in the 119th minute.
This triumph sees Sarina Wiegman become the third manager to win three consecutive European Championships, after Germany duo Gero Bisanz in 1989, 1991 and 1995 and Tina Theune in 1997, 2001 and 2005.
